Martins beach, Half moon bay, CA

Martin's Beach is a beautiful beach off Highway 1 in Half Moon Bay, CA. The beach has many interesting stacks/rock formations close to the beach that make for interesting compositions during sunset. Typically, the traffic along Highway 92 is stop-and-go, especially on the weekends. I prefer to use Highway 84 to get to the coast from the South Bay. It takes 10-15 minutes more but it doesn't usually get clogged like 92.

There is a small parking lot on Highway 1 when you pull into Martin's drive. There is no parking further down, so you should park on the highway and hike half a mile to the beach. The most unique rock formation on the beach is a triangle-shaped large rock. A lot of exciting compositions are possible using this rock as the foreground. There are also plenty of seals and surfers along this beach, so if you have a long telephoto, other interesting compositions are possible as well. I hung around till sunset and make a few panoramic compositions using the rock. I was hoping for a reflection of the rock on the surface of the beach but it was not to be. I used a slower exposure to capture the motion blur as the water recedes on the surface.

The far side of the beach might also have interesting views of the rock formations and sunset, I didn't get a chance to explore this time, will get to it on the next visit.
